POLYTECHNIC COURSES & COLLEGES

There are about fifty branches of study at Polytechnic Colleges. These are the diploma courses approved by AICTE. The branches which are in great demand are: Computer Engineering, Computer Networking, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Information Technology and Instrumentation & Control Engineering. For other branches, you can refer the websites that I have given below.

We have to select the polytechnic colleges carefully. Before admitting the students it is necessary to check whether they are approved colleges. There are three groups of colleges. The first is Govt. Polytechnics, run by Education department of Govt. of Tamil Nadu. There are 17 Govt. colleges in Tamilnadu and 5 in Puducherry. The second group is the Govt. aided colleges. There are 34 such colleges in Tamilnadu. The third is the Self Financing Polytechnics. There are about 150 such Polytechnics.

Normally self financing institutions collect donations. The fee payable to Govt. and Govt. aided colleges is around Rs.5000 p.a. This consists of Tuition fee, Special fee and development fee. Self financing colleges charge around Rs.22,000 p.a.

AFTER 10TH STANDARD WHAT?

Our streets are now almost empty without children. School vacation started and the children have gone outstations to enjoy their holidays. Public examinations results are due to be published soon. Those who complete their 12th standard will choose their career and go to colleges. But what about those who complete their 10th standard? Usually, parents do not chalk out any program except asking the students to continue their schooling. When I was casually discussing with a career counsellor, some interesting matters emerged which I want to share with you all.

Students passing out 10th standard are grouped into three categories. The firt is below average students who score less than 50% average marks. According to the counsellor, they should continue their schooling and opt for arts subjects after 12th standard. The second category is brilliant students who score 75% and above average marks. It is good for them to continue their schooling and opt for professional courses like medical, engineering and accounting after completing their schooling.

The third category of students are those who score between 50 and 75% average marks. It is advised that these students stop and proceed to select their course of action. It is better for them to select Diploma courses and join polytechnics. After completing three years diploma course they can join engineering colleges through lateral entry. In lateral entry the student gets admission easily and he/she has to study the course only for three years instead of 4 years. He spends a total of 10+3+3=16 years. A student who joins B.E. after 12th standard also spends 10+2+4=16 years. The latter has to struggle to get admission whereas a diploma holder gets admission easily through lateral entry. More over, if the diploma holder gets lucrative employment after completing his diploma, he can join a job. When he completes his B.E., he will have a diploma and degree.

Please wait for my next post which will tell you the diploma courses and the selection of polytechnics etc.

HISTORY OF KAYALPATNAM

Assalamu Alaikum.

You all must be aware of Wikipedia. It is a free encyclopedia on the web. The address of the site is: www.wikipedia.com. The site has a search box with which you can search the topic you are interested in. If you become a member of the site and if you are well informed about a subject, you too can post.

When I searched for Kayalpatnam and landed at the page I was really surprised to see the contents. The page has the following tag: “Any material not supported by sources may be challenged and removed at any time. This article has been tagged since March 2007.”

Let us see the contents. The second paragraph lists a few ‘pallies’ in the town. It says: “Kadal Karai Palli (the second mosque in India, first mosque of the town)”. Which is the first one in India? If a foreign tourist comes for research, do we have anything to prove this claim? Moreover, the content does not distinguish between tombs of saints (durgahs) and mosques. For example: Yousuf Appa Palli. Then go to the history part. The writer has doubts about the historical facts of Kayalpatnam. It reads as:”What is less certain, however, is whether that ancient port is what that exists today as the bustling town of Kayalpatnam. Several archeological evidences seem to suggest so, but still some doubts persist.”

While listing the masjids in the town, there is no chronological order of the mosques built. Latest one finds the first place. While listing the Islamic Colleges, the writers have forgotten the oldest ones: Mahlara, Zavia and recently found hifz madrasa Hameediya.

Then read the para ‘Why the name Kayalpatnam’. It says: “In Tamil, the word Kayal stands for the sea and the adjoining lands. Patnam literally means a city or town. Hence Kayalpatnam refers to the city adjoining the sea. Few towns nearby also carry Kayal as part of their name.” Is it so? If the answer is yes, is Kulasekarapatnam nearer to Kayalpatnam is a city? Do we have all infrastructures of a city?

The original inhabitants were Weavers of Nesavu Streets who were exporting sarees to Cleopatra (according to Prof. Abul Barakath), people of Parimar Street who were well versed with horses (Pari=horse) and people of Koman Street who were owners of ships (pai mara kappal) and sailors. No mention has been made anywhere about these original inhabitants. Poor Red Indians!

If you go through the entire page, you will see many contradicting and controversial matters which have been posted by immature persons or people who are interested in damaging the image and historical facts of the town. Unless we put in coordinated and concerted efforts, without any bias, the name of our town will be erased by some vested interests. Beware!

INTERNET CONNECTION

Cheaper & better internet connection

Let’s continue our discussion about Web earnings. We will discuss about Internet Connection which is cheap and best. In this discussion, I am not going to encourage you to go for broad band. If you have one, there is no problem. For those who intend to have Internet connection, I suggest BSNL’s Sancharnet PSTN connection. This is very cheap and good.

To get yourself connected to Sancharnet, you need a modem of 56 Kb installed in your PC and a land line phone. The modem is available for Rs.250 to Rs.500. Better select the best to avoid any future problem. Get a prepaid Internet PSTN card from BSNL for Rs.282. You can use this card for 50 hours and the validity of the card is one year from the date of purchase. If you browse Internet between 11P.M and 8 A.M. and during day time on Sundays, you are not charged and the balance in your Internet card will not get reduced. This is as regards Internet charge.

As you are browsing using landline phone, you have to pay for the phone charges. Between 7.31 A.M. and 10.30 P.M., the charge is full. The phone charge for internet usage is different from normal usage. The full charge is 7.50 minutes per call (against 2 mins. per call for normal usage). Between 10.31 P.M. and 7.30 A.M., the charge is half. That is 15 minutes per call. Therefore, if you browse between 10.31 P.M. and 7.30 A.M. for one hour, you have to pay for 4 calls, i.e. Rs.4/hour. Between 7.31 A.M. and 10.30 P.M., you have to pay for 8 calls, i.e. Rs.8/hour. Is it not cheaper?

STRESS MANAGEMENT IN ISLAM

We wait in air ports either on transit or to board a plane. We wait in hospitals after taking a number. We wait in railway stations. We get ourselves bored and become impatient. Islam shows us the way to manage our stress and time. I have received the following from a visitor from Dubai which he had experienced in a hospital. This experience mended him for better. I wish all of us to mend ourselves, Insha Allah.

TO ALL BROTHERS / SISTERS.
My young son has been unwell. I decided to take him to hospital. There were many waiting; perhaps we will be delayed by more than an hour. I took my number and sat down in the waiting room. There were many faces, young and old, but all silent. Some brothers made use of the many booklets available in the waiting room. Some of those waiting had their eyes closed, while others were looking around. Most were bored.

A young man grabbed my attention. He was reading a pocket-sized Quran continuously; not raising his head even once. At first I did not think much about him. However, after one hour of waiting my casual glances turned into a deep reflection about his lifestyle and how he utilizes his time. Then the call for prayer was made. We went to prayer in the hospital's Masjid. I tried to pray close to the man who was reading the Quran earlier in the waiting room. After the prayer I walked with him. I informed him of how impressed I was of him and how he tries to benefit from his time.

He told me that most of our time is wasted without any benefit. These are days that go from our lives without being conscious of them or regretting their waste. He said that he started carrying the pocket-sized Quran around when a friend encouraged him to make full use of his time. He told me that in the time other people waste he gets to read much more of the Quran than he gets to read either at home or in the Masjid. Moreover, besides the reward of reading the Quran, this habit saves him from boredom and stress.

He added that he has now been waiting for one and a half hours. Then he asked, when will you find one and a half hours to read the Quran? How much time do we waste? How many moments of our lives pass by, and yet we do not account for how they passed by? Indeed, how many months pass by and we do not read the Quran? I came to respect my companion, and I discovered that I am to stand for account and that time is not in my hand; so what am I waiting for?

My thoughts were interrupted by the nurse calling out my number; I went to the doctor. But I want to achieve something now. After I left the hospital I quickly went to the bookshop and bought a pocket-sized Quran. I decided to be mindful of how I spend the time.
If this information is beneficial to you, then please do forward it to your friends and relatives. Our Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said; "Whoever guides or directs to good, then he gets the same amount of blessing (reward) as the one who does it" The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) also said "Pass on knowledge from me even if it is only one verse".

FREE LANCE PART/FULL TIME JOBS

In my last post, I had mentioned about the freelance part-time Web Design requirement of one of our visitors. There may be so many others interested in doing part/full time freelance job in their skill areas. In our eagerness to get such jobs, we are cheated by people who are experts in cheating. This is called internet scam. I will be making an entry in future about the internet scams and Nigeria 419.

To get freelance job, there is one website called GetAFreelancer.com. I am a member of this site for nearly two years. They invite both Service Buyer and Service Provider to register with them. (Just like the job portals invite Employers and Job seekers). When you want to do
free lance jobs, you are a Service Provider. It is free to register with the company. Those who join as ordinary members have to pay a commission of 10% or $5(whichever is greater) on every job you take up through this site. There are also Gold Members. If you want to become a gold member you have to pay $10 p.m. and you will not be charged any commission for the job you take up. For the time being, you can join as a regular member free of charge. If you are successful in getting jobs, never mind paying commission.

You can choose from any one or more of the following areas depending upon your skill. Just have a glance at these areas and note down your areas of interest before going to their site.

XML, Website Security, Visual Basic, Training, SEO, Proofreading, Photography, Logo Design Legal Advice, Java, Graphic Design, Electronics, Data Entry, C/C++ , ASP, Wireless, Website Design, Virtual Reality, Telemarketing, Script Installation, Project Management, Perl/CGI, Linux, JSP, J2EE, Flash, Delphi, Copywriting, Banner Design , .NET, Windows, Web Promotion, Translation, System Admin., Python, PHP, Market Research, Link Building, Javascript, Handheld / PDA, Engineering, Data Processing, Cold Fusion, Audio Services.

Once you register with them, you will be getting emails from the company suggesting you to bid for the jobs that are suitable to you. You have to bid for the job in their site. If you win the bid, you will be awarded the job. The Service buyer need not select the lowest bidder. He may select depending upon your profile you post.

The special feature of GetAFreelancer is that no body can cheat you. The site owners take a deposit from the Service Buyer once the bid is finalized. They will release the payment to you - the service provider - only after they get satisfactory clearance from the buyer. Payment is guaranteed by GetAFreelancer. You can get more information from the site and from FAQs. After registering your name with them, read the terms & conditions carefully. Never violate their norms.

Now you may click the following link to land at their site and register free as a Service Provider. Best of luck.

I will be writing more on this ‘part time free lance job’ topic in due course. Till then try GetAFreelancer.

JUMA NEWS

Announcement in Juma

Moulana Moulavi Farooq Alim lectured on the following thought provoking subject on Friday, 30th Mar.: We have to teach our children and induct them in prayers from the age of 7. The children should start performing the prayers from the age of 10. We are having sufficient number of schools-both Tamil medium & English medium- in Kayalpatnam. But our people are sending our children to other nearby places sacrificing Islamic studies and compulsory prayers. He requests all to stop this practice from the forth coming educational year. He requests VIPs to gather and decide on this subject or close and seal all the schools existing in our town.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Assalamu Alaikum.

Our web site visitor Mr. L.T. Ibraheem, from China has sent the following message.

“You are doing a great service to our community by updating and giving good information. Let your thoughts be success for many more years. I suggest the following:

Since India is becoming economically strong and the analysts predict that it will be No:3 in 15 years and No:2 in 35 years in world economy, we have to prepare ourselves to take part in the forth coming years.

I read in a newspaper that there will be a strong need for people who speak foreign languages such as Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish, German and French in near future due to the business environment. So I suggest our community young people to learn and know about any of the above languages to prepare for good times ahead.- Ibraheem L.T.”

Thank you L.T. I fully agree with you. Our people who are already abroad, especially in Gulf countries, may not be able to study the above languages. However, they can benefit from free online tutorials on the language of interest to them. Definitely, those countries must be giving free online tutorials supported by hard copies and CDs to promote their languages. Loyola College had French and German for the benefit of their students. But the students had to go to the embassies of the respective countries to learn. Our community youngsters who are in metro cities like Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi etc. should contact the respective embassies to learn these languages suggested by Mr. LT. It is worth taking pain to widen your language base and spread your wings globally.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

Assalamu Alaikum

In my last post, I had given an introduction to Web Earnings. The first lesson is on Web Designing. To learn the entire course and make you a Webmaster, the following are the requirements:

1. Basic knowledge of typewriting: Initially, even typing with two fingers is enough. But you must develop a speed of at least 40 words per minute.

2. Basic knowledge of Computers: You have computer knowledge that is why you are reading this. But I expect you to inform your sons and daughters or brothers and sisters about the good opportunities open in Web Designing field. So, it is necessary for them to learn the basics of computer operation.

3. A computer: If you own one, it is good. Many of you have purchased a computer out of enthusiasm but it is covered nicely and kept in a corner. Don’t make the PCs useless by keeping them idle. Printer ink and UPS batteries get dried up unless used. If you cannot afford to buy one beg or borrow from your neighbor. Pentium PIII used computers are now available for Rs.7000 to 8000 range. Check the PC thoroughly before buying one.

4. Internet Connection: I will elaborate on this subject in my next posting, Insha Allah.

WEB EARNINGS

Hello Friends!

I am very happy to know that your KayalparnamCommunity site has become very popular within a short period. Alhamdhu Lillah. However, I will be pleased if you post your comments in the site just clicking the comment button. You may also send your comments to my e-mail address Khwaja.Shah@gmail.com. Please do not use the e-mail address given earlier.
Almighty Allah has bestowed on us at least one skill to earn our livelihood. He may have given some of you more than one skill. If we are not utilizing that skill, it is due to our own laziness. First of all try to find out the skill that you possess. A cook prepares food for a marriage party of 1000 people. You may not be able to do that. He plans, organizes, prepares and serves the food on time without any complaint. Is it not a skill that he possesses? He can earn money from Internet by creating a Website and posting the knowledge he possesses in the Web. Do not underestimate yourself. You have lot of potentials within you. You can mint money from those potentials. Identify your skill/skills first. As I said earlier, I am going to post a series of articles on how to make money. The first on the list is Web Designing and earning money.

Are you educated but not employed? Learn Web Designing from your home and become a Webmaster. You can get employment with five figure salary. Or you can become a business man/woman by getting yourself self-employed.

Are you beneficially employed and you want to make money on part time? Learn Web Designing from your home and become a Webmaster. Become a Web Consultant or create your own Web Site and earn money.

I am going to lead you through several postings on how you can become a Webmaster and earn money. The project that I am going to explain to you is a very good avenue to earn decent income. This is suitable for both men and women. You don’t have to go to any institute to learn the skill of web designing. You can learn from home and can get a well recognized diploma too. Mind you, degrees and diplomas are not important. The skill that you acquire in any field is important. Only skills pay you and not your degrees and diplomas. Try to follow the steps carefully to become a skilled webmaster than a qualified webmaster.

Please wait for my next posting.

IS JELLY ALLOWED IN ISLAM?

IS JELLY ALLOWED IN ISLAM?

Whenever we do shopping, especially when we are returning from abroad, we buy a jar of Jelly containing 50 or 100 pieces. This jelly is packed in conical plastic cups and are very attractive because they are made in different colors. Our children love it. Before a few years, it was not available in the market. Nowadays, it is available even in petty shops for 50 paise and one rupee. Our children are happy to spend their pocket money in buying this jelly. Our women folk buy jelly powder or granules from shops to make desserts on special occasions. Now it is common to mix this colorful jelly with our traditional china grass and make desserts to treat our relations and friends.

Do we know from what or how the jelly in cones is made? Buy Jelly powder from shops. Add food colors and flavors to this powder. Boil water and add this powder mix and sugar. Stir well. Cool the mix and fill the cones. Refrigerate the jelly filled cones for cooled dessert. Now it is ready for serving. Wait. Don’t hurry to the nearby super market or baqala to buy the powder.
Do you know from what the jelly powder is made? A few months back, I read on article in the New Indian Express –health page about jelly. Wherever possible, I spread the news how the jelly powder is made.To share my knowledge with my community, I browsed Internet and collected the following information.

The raw material for Jelly is Collagen. Collagen dried and powdered is named as gelatin. Gelatin is flavored and sold as powder. The desserts made of gelatin is Jelly. Now read carefully how the collagen is produced. The bones, hooves and horns of cattle and skin of pigs are boiled. Then the boiled materials are soaked with acid or alkalin to extract and hydrolyse the protien called Collagen. This villain becomes the hero with the name gelatin when dried and powdered. Gelatin then becomes Jelly which our children love most and we eat as dessert in our homes. This jelly causes many diseases. Ananlysing those detailsare not our concern as our primary concern is about collagen itself. Now you decide whether this colorful and attractive Monster is to be allowed in our homes!

Inform your family members, friends and relatives to avoid this jelly totally. When you come home next time do not carry this for your beloved children and family.

Your blogger Khwaja Shah says:
The above are the highlights of the literature distributed and the lecture delivered by the Unit Head, Capt. William Thangaraj in the meeting held at SPIC Gymkhana.( Refer my previous post). The reason to take up this course in our blog is that the course is conducted at SPIC premises by NTTF which is a famous institution in technical training. The center is closer to us. However, the participants in the meeting raised questions on high fee charged. Capt. William also mentioned that the institution is not recognized by AICTE. According to him, AICTE is ready to give approval but they do not agree to the two terms of NTTF. One is NTTF should not be compelled to reduce fees and other is no quota system should be applied to NTTF.

We have given you the merits and demerits of the courses. Now, it is up to you to decide. We are not agents or affiliates to the institution. Choice is yours.

They are conducting 3 short term part time courses which may benefit our Engineers who are employed. They can study those courses when they are on vacation. The courses are:

1. Programmable Logic Control (PLC)
2. Geometric Dimension & Tolerancing (GD & T)

ANNOUNCEMENTS IN JUMA

Moulana Moulavi Janab Abdul Cader Alim made two announcements in today’s Juma as instructed by the Management of the mosque.

Before telling you the announcements, let us say something about kidnapping. About a month back it was reported that a gang of about 4/5 people were trying to drag a child of about 10 years to a van parked aside in bye-pass road. The boy’s friends who were accompanying him raised alarm and the people around came running to rescue the boy. The gang left the boy and escaped. Intention? Kidnapping.

For the last two weeks many such cases were reported. The gang come in a van or a car and try to lure the children with sweets or try to throw some powder, keeping the car door open. Three such cases were reported by eye witnesses. In all these, their attempts failed because the children ran away.

You are well aware of the happenings in Noida near Delhi. At Noida, the culprit is stated to be a pervert. He along with his servant abused children between the age group of 10-15 years. It was reported in a section of news papers that the servant after killing the children used the flesh to eat. This case, as on now, is a case of mental imbalance of the culprits. Many kidnappings are now happening in India, more in north and less in south. The motives differ. Some kidnappings are for ransom money (as in the case of Adobe CEO’s 4 year old boy). Other kidnappings are for prostitution, begging, taking away kidneys etc. We are finding every alternate day one such case of kidnappings.

Nowadays we find many northerners, who do not know Tamil, in our streets selling brooms, blankets etc. They talk only in Hindi. We all should discourage such people doing business. Our women folk should be advised not to entertain them and allow their entry into our ‘mudukku’.

Our respected Katheef made the following two important announcements:

1. As a gang of kidnappers are trying to kidnap our children, we should take all care to protect our children. The parents or ayahs should escort the children to schools and madrasas. Even though the children are aware of these incidents they some times, because of their innocence, get trapped in the hands of this gang. A toy is enough to cheat the children. So, our Alim has instructed all of us to be on guard. (Please inform your home)

2. Another important announcement is about our Chiriya Juma Masjid. The construction of the mosque is almost complete by the Will of Allah. However, the finishing part remains incomplete. The management of the mosque is in need of about Rs.1.5 lakh to paint walls and wooden items such as doors, windows and almiras. Insha Allah, with this amount the work will be complete. EDUCATION AND TRAINING

School vacation is coming. Exams.have started for 12th standard and 10th exams. are about to start. As a father or brother, you are more worried about the future of your children. No more entrance exam. for professional courses. Unless the students score very good marks, it is difficult to get admissions in professional courses. You are away from home doing your business or employed. You are in other parts of India or abroad, somewhere in Saudi or in UAE, or in Africa, or in China or in Hong Kong earning your livelihood for your family. You know it is your concern to guide your sons and daughters towards better future. Our people were doing gem business or leather business or iron scrap business and inducted their sons into their business. Now the scenario has changed due to various reasons. Education has become essential not only for knowledge but also for decent living.

About 50 years back, our women were unlettered but now find at least one graduate in each house. When we talk about education, we can not forget our heroes like Janab Abdul Hai Alim, who started Kahira Padasalai, Janab L.K.Lebbe Thamby mama who carried on the mission of Janab Abdul Hai Alim and championed the starting of a High School at Peyan Vilai – K.A. High School and Janab M.K.T. Aboobacker mama who started the elementary school at central Kayal to facilitate children of that area to get education. May Allah show mercy on them.

India is not as it was before 50 years. For the last 5 years, India is marching ahead at a rapid phase in all areas, especially in technological field. Shortly we will be one of the best in the world in the field of technology. We are proud to be Indians as we are now respected anywhere in the world. I was closely associated with LK mama during my school and college days and even after that till his last days. It is not an exaggeration, and many of you who knew LK mama closely will agree with me, when I say that he was Abdul Kalam of the past. He had lot of dreams. He wanted all of our people, both men and women, to get educated. He had a strong conviction that our people are most intelligent, talented and tolerant people. Tolerant in the sense that they can live amicably whether they are in North pole or Sahara Desert. His saying has come true. Now we find our community people all over the world as Engineers, Chartered Accountants, Medical professionals, Advocates, people with doctorates in various fields, IIM MBAs, Technologists in Information, Scientists and many more.

Only area where we are lagging behind is Government jobs. We have no IAS, IPS, IFS officers. We have no Ambassadors. We have no Collectors in Administration, Customs and Excise Depts. Insha Allah, our future generation will fulfill this desire in the near future. There was a time when people who went to madrasas to become Alims and Hafizul Quran remained as Alims and Hafizs only. Now we have Engineer- Hafiz, Doctor- Hafiz, Scientist – Hafiz and so on. To my knowledge, there is no Engineer- Alim, Doctor – Alim, Scientist Alim etc. If we all spend some energy towards this goal our dreams will come true. University graduate-Alims can lead their life in spiritual way and guide our people towards Islam without any fear and prejudice.

To help you –the man away from home- we are going to post some educational and training courses that may benefit our community. Many alternatives will be presented to you. Choice is yours. We all have in our blood ‘selflessness’. We do not think of ourselves alone. We think of our neighbors and relatives. The guidelines may not be beneficial to you at present because your children are small but surely you may guide your neighbors and relatives. Let us all make a better educated and prosperous Kayalpatnam and in turn a better educated and prosperous India.

Our next posting will be, Insha Allah, on ‘Technical education and employment prospects’. This blogger spared time to attend a meeting conducted by NTTF Technical Training centre, jointly with SPIC Jaycees and SPIC Lioness Club of Thoothukudy at SPIC Gymkhana on 7th March, 2007 between 5.30 PM and 7.30 PM on the above subject. Your blogger had to forego his Magrib prayer to attend this meeting. May Allah forgive me as this is for the benefit of our community. Wait for next posting. Till then, Assalamu Alaikum. Khuda Hafiz.
