POLYTECHNIC COURSES & COLLEGES

There are about fifty branches of study at Polytechnic Colleges. These are the diploma courses approved by AICTE. The branches which are in great demand are: Computer Engineering, Computer Networking, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Information Technology and Instrumentation & Control Engineering. For other branches, you can refer the websites that I have given below.

We have to select the polytechnic colleges carefully. Before admitting the students it is necessary to check whether they are approved colleges. There are three groups of colleges. The first is Govt. Polytechnics, run by Education department of Govt. of Tamil Nadu. There are 17 Govt. colleges in Tamilnadu and 5 in Puducherry. The second group is the Govt. aided colleges. There are 34 such colleges in Tamilnadu. The third is the Self Financing Polytechnics. There are about 150 such Polytechnics.

Normally self financing institutions collect donations. The fee payable to Govt. and Govt. aided colleges is around Rs.5000 p.a. This consists of Tuition fee, Special fee and development fee. Self financing colleges charge around Rs.22,000 p.a.

AFTER 10TH STANDARD WHAT?

Our streets are now almost empty without children. School vacation started and the children have gone outstations to enjoy their holidays. Public examinations results are due to be published soon. Those who complete their 12th standard will choose their career and go to colleges. But what about those who complete their 10th standard? Usually, parents do not chalk out any program except asking the students to continue their schooling. When I was casually discussing with a career counsellor, some interesting matters emerged which I want to share with you all.

Students passing out 10th standard are grouped into three categories. The firt is below average students who score less than 50% average marks. According to the counsellor, they should continue their schooling and opt for arts subjects after 12th standard. The second category is brilliant students who score 75% and above average marks. It is good for them to continue their schooling and opt for professional courses like medical, engineering and accounting after completing their schooling.

The third category of students are those who score between 50 and 75% average marks. It is advised that these students stop and proceed to select their course of action. It is better for them to select Diploma courses and join polytechnics. After completing three years diploma course they can join engineering colleges through lateral entry. In lateral entry the student gets admission easily and he/she has to study the course only for three years instead of 4 years. He spends a total of 10+3+3=16 years. A student who joins B.E. after 12th standard also spends 10+2+4=16 years. The latter has to struggle to get admission whereas a diploma holder gets admission easily through lateral entry. More over, if the diploma holder gets lucrative employment after completing his diploma, he can join a job. When he completes his B.E., he will have a diploma and degree.

Please wait for my next post which will tell you the diploma courses and the selection of polytechnics etc.

Your blogger Khwaja Shah says:
The above are the highlights of the literature distributed and the lecture delivered by the Unit Head, Capt. William Thangaraj in the meeting held at SPIC Gymkhana.( Refer my previous post). The reason to take up this course in our blog is that the course is conducted at SPIC premises by NTTF which is a famous institution in technical training. The center is closer to us. However, the participants in the meeting raised questions on high fee charged. Capt. William also mentioned that the institution is not recognized by AICTE. According to him, AICTE is ready to give approval but they do not agree to the two terms of NTTF. One is NTTF should not be compelled to reduce fees and other is no quota system should be applied to NTTF.

We have given you the merits and demerits of the courses. Now, it is up to you to decide. We are not agents or affiliates to the institution. Choice is yours.

They are conducting 3 short term part time courses which may benefit our Engineers who are employed. They can study those courses when they are on vacation. The courses are:

1. Programmable Logic Control (PLC)
2. Geometric Dimension & Tolerancing (GD & T)
3. Pneumatics

Duration of these short term course is : 40 Hours; 6 to 8 P.M.; On all days including Sat. & Sundays. Fees for the course are: Rs. 3500 plus Rs. 500 for certificate.

Contact persons and address of NTTF, Thoothukudy:
Capt. P.N. William Thangaraj, Unit Head, or Mr.Om Prakash, NTTF Technical Training Centre, SPIC Nagar, Thoothukudy- 628 005. Cell: 94430-47750; Email: nttf_tuticorin@yahoo.com

Insha Allah, we will be covering more short term training courses for engineers in our next post.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

School vacation is coming. Exams.have started for 12th standard and 10th exams. are about to start. As a father or brother, you are more worried about the future of your children. No more entrance exam. for professional courses. Unless the students score very good marks, it is difficult to get admissions in professional courses. You are away from home doing your business or employed. You are in other parts of India or abroad, somewhere in Saudi or in UAE, or in Africa, or in China or in Hong Kong earning your livelihood for your family. You know it is your concern to guide your sons and daughters towards better future. Our people were doing gem business or leather business or iron scrap business and inducted their sons into their business. Now the scenario has changed due to various reasons. Education has become essential not only for knowledge but also for decent living.

About 50 years back, our women were unlettered but now find at least one graduate in each house. When we talk about education, we can not forget our heroes like Janab Abdul Hai Alim, who started Kahira Padasalai, Janab L.K.Lebbe Thamby mama who carried on the mission of Janab Abdul Hai Alim and championed the starting of a High School at Peyan Vilai – K.A. High School and Janab M.K.T. Aboobacker mama who started the elementary school at central Kayal to facilitate children of that area to get education. May Allah show mercy on them.

India is not as it was before 50 years. For the last 5 years, India is marching ahead at a rapid phase in all areas, especially in technological field. Shortly we will be one of the best in the world in the field of technology. We are proud to be Indians as we are now respected anywhere in the world. I was closely associated with LK mama during my school and college days and even after that till his last days. It is not an exaggeration, and many of you who knew LK mama closely will agree with me, when I say that he was Abdul Kalam of the past. He had lot of dreams. He wanted all of our people, both men and women, to get educated. He had a strong conviction that our people are most intelligent, talented and tolerant people. Tolerant in the sense that they can live amicably whether they are in North pole or Sahara Desert. His saying has come true. Now we find our community people all over the world as Engineers, Chartered Accountants, Medical professionals, Advocates, people with doctorates in various fields, IIM MBAs, Technologists in Information, Scientists and many more.

Only area where we are lagging behind is Government jobs. We have no IAS, IPS, IFS officers. We have no Ambassadors. We have no Collectors in Administration, Customs and Excise Depts. Insha Allah, our future generation will fulfill this desire in the near future. There was a time when people who went to madrasas to become Alims and Hafizul Quran remained as Alims and Hafizs only. Now we have Engineer- Hafiz, Doctor- Hafiz, Scientist – Hafiz and so on. To my knowledge, there is no Engineer- Alim, Doctor – Alim, Scientist Alim etc. If we all spend some energy towards this goal our dreams will come true. University graduate-Alims can lead their life in spiritual way and guide our people towards Islam without any fear and prejudice.

To help you –the man away from home- we are going to post some educational and training courses that may benefit our community. Many alternatives will be presented to you. Choice is yours. We all have in our blood ‘selflessness’. We do not think of ourselves alone. We think of our neighbors and relatives. The guidelines may not be beneficial to you at present because your children are small but surely you may guide your neighbors and relatives. Let us all make a better educated and prosperous Kayalpatnam and in turn a better educated and prosperous India.

Our next posting will be, Insha Allah, on ‘Technical education and employment prospects’. This blogger spared time to attend a meeting conducted by NTTF Technical Training centre, jointly with SPIC Jaycees and SPIC Lioness Club of Thoothukudy at SPIC Gymkhana on 7th March, 2007 between 5.30 PM and 7.30 PM on the above subject. Your blogger had to forego his Magrib prayer to attend this meeting. May Allah forgive me as this is for the benefit of our community. Wait for next posting. Till then, Assalamu Alaikum. Khuda Hafiz.
